Grab the popcorn and clear your weekend. From today the High Court of Australia will film proceedings and publish the recordings online.
All Full Court hearings (except Applications for Special Leave) that are heard in Canberra will be recorded and published on the High Court website. The Court expects that it will take several business days after the hearings for the recordings to be checked to ensure that information covered by a publication constraint is not put online.
The decision to make videos of hearings available online is part of the Court’s broader efforts to improve public access. Other available information includes case management timelines, written submissions, transcripts of oral arguments, judgments and judgment summaries for both current cases and past matters.
But don’t expect other Australian courts to begin broadcasting anytime soon. The High Court has said that its decision is not intended to set a precedent for other courts.
