Judges Swap Courtrooms for the Classroom

When Melbourne Uni students head back to class after the summer break, they’ll be joined by two judges.

Justice Susan Kenny of the Federal Court of Australia and Justice David Harper (ret.) of the Supreme Court of Victoria’s Court of Appeal will be Melbourne Law School’s new Judges in Residence, the faculty announced last week.

During their time at the university, the judges will run workshops and classes, deliver guest lectures, and share insights from the bench with students and academics.

Justice Kenny will be the judge in residence in semester one this year, and Justice Harper will join the law school in semester two.

Since the Judge in Residence program began in 2012, four former judges have spent time at the law school. Previous judges in residence were Justice David Habersberger (Supreme Court of Victoria), Justice Bernard Bongiorno (Supreme Court of Victoria), Justice Margaret Stone (Federal Court of Australia) and Chief Justice Michael Black (Federal Court of Australia).
