Law Students as 2019 Met Gala Looks

Whilst critiquing the Met Gala's recent offerings in my K-mart nighties, I thought some of this year’s campy get-ups were very familiar.

Billy Porter

We’ve all met someone who gets carried like Billy Porter at the Met Gala. They rely solely on notes from friends in the years above. They don’t do a single reading. They play Tetris in lectures. Yet they still manage to beat half the cohort.

Lady Gaga

This student, like Lady Gaga, effortlessly smashes the assignment and they aren’t afraid to luxuriate in their success. Just when you think they might’ve fluked it, they destroy the next one. And the next. And so on. All the way ‘til finals.

Jared Leto

Jared Leto’s two faces remind me of students who slyly ask everyone what mark you got for a subject, or in the context of clerkship applications, how many interviews you got and with which firm. They tell you that they haven’t even looked at the assignment, when in reality they’ve already scaffolded their response, pinpoint references and all.

Janelle Monae

This student, like Janelle Monae wearing this architectural piece, wears many hats: they lead the law society, perform in revue, edit the Law Review, moot, volunteer, work as a paralegal, all while trying to sustain their busy social, love and family lives. They’re a frazzled mess whenever you see them, but you can’t help but respect their hustle.

Katy Perry

This student guns the first few weeks. Compulsory readings? Optional secondary literature? Perfectly formatted notes? All check. It pays off in the mid-semester assessments. But then they go astray. The burn-out hits and they bomb the finals. Such wasted potential. Katy Perry? More like Krabby Patty.

These students just don’t even try. They’re just happy to be here. Except Frank Ocean looks miserable, which is a huge mood.
