You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for @Ratiodecidendicecream

Kiefel CJ with an ice cream

Last week, we received an anonymous tip-off about the coolest thing since Lister v Romford Ice & Cold Storage, or Kirby J asking counsel if they brought samples of Pauls and Peters ice creams in Roach v Electoral Commissioner & Anor: an Instagram blog that combines regular ice cream reviews with fresh legal commentary, AKA, gelatobiter dicta. Professed to be spearheaded either by an “ordinary law student or Kiefel CJ”, @ratiodecidendicecream marries every law student’s love of frozen sweets with their complicated love-hate for long, bland judgments. Kind of akin to the O.C.’s Sandy Cohen, whose obsession with ice cream apparently proves that lawyers have souls.

Law degrees being a Rocky Road and all, this insta-blog is perfect for chilling during study brain freezes. (This author being lactose intolerant, I’ll give myself diarrhoea if I keep up the dairy puns). Whether it’s comparing Cow & the Moon’s Affogato gelato to the High Court serving cold justice with promissory estoppel in Walton Stores (Interstate) v Maher, or milking the plainly obvious link between lavender ice cream and Kojonup farmers from Western Australia attempting to recover pure economic loss from their GM-farming neighbours in Marsh v Baxter, the blog astutely spins a legal flavour from any and all varieties of ice cream.

Regrettably, at the moment it isn’t mint to be for vegans and the lactose intolerant: the only dairy free dessert, Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Almond Brittle, received a 1/10. Anyhow, crying over spilt milk is udderly futile. Unlike real ice cream - and full-length, uncondensed judgments - their posts hopefully won’t give you the shits. With updates every few days or so, chuck a follow and maybe get a chuckle in return!
