I don’t want to panic you, but exams are nearly here. Between catching up on a week’s worth of work missed due to trying to complete four assignments at once, trying to learn new content for final weeks of semester and finishing off those last few presentations, I have less time to eat, let alone prepare meals. Actually, I don’t even remember the last time I went to the supermarket.
Luckily, I have a trusty packet (or 30) of Mi Goreng noodles. In times where I simply lack, well, time, I bring out these two-minute wonders. They’re a common student survival secret, and while I wouldn’t suggest living off them indefinitely, they do go a long way to providing fast sustenance.
Sure, you could just follow the directions on the packet, but pre-exam procrastination time spent in the kitchen naturally leads to culinary innovations. Because we’re probably going to be eating a lot of two-minute noodles over the next few weeks, here are some options for keeping the menu interesting…
“A Recipe for Eggcellent grades”
This little gem has gotten me through most of law school and the few days I spent being broken down in the outback due to a car fire. All you need is some two-minute noodles, an egg and some veggies of your choice.
Cook your noodles, drain and add flavouuring. Since this is a choose your own adventure story, steam, stir-fry, BBQ, roast, or microwave some vegetables. Add cooked veggies to your noodles and pop a fried egg on top.
“Getting to Crunch Time”
This one is easy peasy, like pudding and…salad. Whip up your favourite salad and sprinkle some crushed uncooked noodles on top of your greens for extra crunch.
“Out of the Frying Pan and into my Stomach”
Skip the flavouring and eat cooked noodles with your favourite stir-fry.
“A Cup Above the Rest”
For a noodle soup, put noodles, flavouring and some precooked and snap frozen veggies in a lidded mug with boiling water, then pop the lid on and leave for a few minutes. If veggies aren’t hot, just put the mug in the microwave for a few minutes.
I use these as study bribes for myself. Whip up some chocolate crackles, but substitute crushed, uncooked noodles for rice bubbles.
