Working Hardly: The Wisdom of Saul Goodman

Saul Goodman

If you’ve watched Breaking Bad, you’ll be familiar with Saul Goodman. Being a ‘criminal’ lawyer, Saul is perhaps not the character to model your career on, but nevertheless he can still teach us a few things. Here are some of my favourite Saul Goodman quotes…

Confidence

“If you’re committed enough, you can make any story work. I once told a woman I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it.”

Brutal Honesty (aka Frank and Fearless advice)

“Look let’s start with some tough love, alright? Ready for this? Here it goes: you two suck at peddling meth. Period.”

Know when to say ‘No’

"Better safe than sorry. That's my motto."

But recognise that sometimes you’re going to do it anyway… and charge for it

"Yeah, you do seem to have a little s**t creek action going...You know, FYI, you can buy a paddle."

Know the Risks in your Business

"As to your dead guy, occupational hazard. Drug dealer getting shot? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it's been known to happen."

Recognise when people don’t want to hear what you have to say

“Some people are immune to good advice”

Always have an exit strategy

“For a substantial fee, and I do mean substantial, you and your loved ones can vanish. Untraceable.”

There’s a guy for everything

“Let’s just say I know a guy… who knows a guy… who knows another guy.”

In the end, do what is best for you

“Way of the world kid; go with the winner”

P.S. Saul is right; Laser Tag is way cooler than a car wash.
