A team from the University of Melbourne has defeated the University of Tasmania to win the eighth Castan Centre Human Rights Law Mooting Competition.
Melbourne Law School students Jack Maxwell, Zoe Anderson and Andy Lynch beat UTAS’ Aaron Moss, Madeleine Pillans and Adrian Hilly in a closely fought grand final at the Victorian Court of Appeal.
Justice Debbie Mortimer of the Federal Court of Australia, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner Kate Jenkins, and Professor Spencer Zifcak of Australian Catholic University judged the grand final.
This year’s competition question covered humane treatment for prisoners and detainees, fair trial rights, and rights to privacy, and attracted 14 teams from across Australia.
