A team from the University of New South Wales has won the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Geneva.
UNSW law students Sumer Dayal and Ashna Taneja were named overall champions, and also brought home the prize for best memorials. Dayal was named best speaker.
Launched in 2009, the competition aims to bring together students, academics and lawyers from different legal systems to debate and explore contemporary issues in human rights. This year’s moot problem saw 13 teams from 12 countries debate issues around the rights of women and ethnic minorities and the use of military force in the face of civil unrest. The judging panel included the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights.
