The University of Sydney is celebrating after winning the Shine Lawyers National Torts Moot in Brisbane last week.

In a grand final held at the Banco Court of the Supreme Court of Queensland before Chief Justice Paul de Jersey, students Alice Zhou, Thomas Farmakis, William Hanna and Proteek Chowdhury, defeated the team from UNSW in the final to take home the title for 2013.

Thomas Farmakis won the award for best speaker in the final.

"They all put a tremendous amount of work into the competition," said Sydney University moot coach Jackson Wherrett of the team’s performance.

"I said to them that sometimes the hard work pays off, and sometimes it doesn't, so it's very nice when it does."

Fifteen universities competed in this year's competition - the highest number of teams since the competition began.
