Why you Need to Take a Holiday

Woman lying on the grass

Exam period is upon us, which means that you probably can’t remember the last time you’ve watched a movie without feeling guilty, or the last time you went to bed before 1am.

Whether you have just started exams, are somewhere in the middle or have finally finished your assessments for the semester, this is the perfect time to take a holiday. Here’s why you should resist the urge to take on extra shifts at work/begin studying for next semester and take a break instead…

Something to look forward to

Exam period feels like being trapped in a dark dungeon with nothing but food, lectures playing at 2x speed and a never-ending list of judgments to sort through. As much as you may love the atmosphere of a library filled with highly-strung law students, or the smell of your dirty pyjamas, you may sometimes feel the need for a light at the end of the tunnel.

Booking a holiday when you’re still in the middle of exams will give you the motivation to push through and study hard, knowing that there’s an awesome escape waiting for you on the other side.

A reason to eat better

I am a chronic stress eater. I normally eat relatively healthy foods, but as soon as exams start, I can’t stop with the junk food. This exam period I have successfully eaten my way through:

  • 3 packets of Tim Tams;

  • 4 family blocks of Kit Kat;

  • A few bags of Pods;

  • 5 lamb kebabs;

  • Over 10 packets of Mentos;

  • A Whopper Junior meal from Hungry Jacks; and

  • A cheeseburger meal with a chocolate thick shake from McDonald’s.

This is only my second week of exams.

If you’re like me and are planning to go somewhere warm to beat the winter blues, knowing that you’ll soon be lazing on a beach somewhere in your itty bitty bikini (or budgie smuggler) is a good motivation to keep up the exercise and eat well during exams.

Because you deserve it

We could spend all day giving reasons for holidaying, but in the end, no matter the reason, you deserve a break. A typical day in the life of a law student is not always easy. Whether you choose to simply take a day trip, or opt for an epic overseas trip, it will do wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing.

But for now, good luck with exams (and your holiday planning).
