The University of Wollongong has chosen a course delivered by ANU Legal Workshop to replace its in-house practical legal training (PLT) program.
The university’s decision last year to axe its own loss-making Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice was opposed by the UOW Law Students’ Society, which lobbied the faculty against the decision.
A key concern was ensuring that a practical legal training course was still available to students on campus. Following presentations by PLT providers this year, the LSS ran a survey to identify issues of relevance to law students, including engagement with the Wollongong legal profession and recognition of legal internship hours.
UOW’s Dean of Law Professor Warwick Gullet thanked the LSS for its work with the faculty in the new arrangement.
“We are pleased that UOW students will continue to have a quality PLT option which will not require them to travel out of the area,” he said.
Professor Gullett said the “co-operative arrangement” with ANU Legal Workshop would begin from July 2013. The GDLP course involves a 5-day intensive ‘Becoming a Practitioner’ workshop, to be held on campus, and an online learning program.
