A new tribunal dealing with a broad range of administrative legal issues is being set up in South Australia to take pressure off the state’s courts.
The South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal will have the power make and review many of the administrative decisions currently made by ministers, commissioners and other specialist boards and tribunals.
Legislation to establish the tribunal was introduced last week.
South Australian Attorney General John Rau said new body would focus on alternative dispute resolution and would help to relieve some of backlog and delays experienced in the court system.
“The tribunal will have the power to obtain evidence, manage parties, make appropriate determinations and control its processes to suit the matter it is considering,” he said.
It will be headed by a President who will also be a Judge of the state’s Supreme Court or District Court.
